Doors open for DJCAD Masters Show 2012

Photo opportunity: 6pm on Friday, 17th August at Matthew Gallery, Matthew Building, Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design. Jeanette Paul will be opening this year's Masters Show.

A 3D-reconstruction of a decapitated Viking's skull, a project to promote neighbourliness in a Dundee housing scheme, and a set of 'dating chairs' for romance-seekers are just some of the talking points at this year's DJCAD Masters Show.

The exhibition, which opens with a special, invite-only Preview Evening tomorrow night, will see around 50 postgraduate students from Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design (DJCAD) display their work from the past year. Jeanette Paul, Head of Learning & Teaching at DJCAD, will declare the Masters Show open at the Matthew Gallery at 6pm before presenting prizes to a number of exhibiting students.

The eye-catching and thought-provoking work from five Masters programmes - Animation & Visualisation, Design, Fine Art, Forensic Art and Medical Art - will be exhibited at both DJCAD and at GENERATOR Projects, Mid Wynd, from 18th-26th August. An Open Doors event between 11am-4pm on Saturday, 17th August will see a series of guided tours and student presentations take place.

Jeanette Paul urged members of the public to visit the Masters Show, saying, "Some of the UK's most exciting postgraduate courses are to be found at DJCAD, and we can certainly boast some of the country's top postgraduate art and design students.

"This year's crop has produced highly stimulating, thought-provoking work which demonstrates intelligent research as well as the creativity, imagination and innovation that is the mark of artists and designers. Their hard work and dedication is demonstrated in the work displayed in this year's Show.

"I would encourage everyone to come along and find out more about what the students have been doing. The conceptual, thought-provoking and vibrant work is truly inspirational."

The students exhibiting include:

  • Kieran Baxter, who has used kite aerial photography and CGI animation to represent the history of ancient heritage sites.
  • Danielle Schumaker, who has carried out a three-dimensional, computerised craniofacial reconstruction of a decapitated Scandinavian man in Dorset, dating from the late 10th century.
  • Di Wang, who worked with residents of the St Mary's area of Dundee to look at how design can help improve the relationship between neighbours.
  • Jean Floyed, who created 'dating chairs' as part of her study into the process of socialisation.

The DJCAD Masters Show 2012 will remain open until Sunday, 26th August. The exhibition is open from 10am-8pm on weekdays and from 10am-4pm at weekends.

In addition to the exhibition at DJCAD, a small selection of work from the Master of Fine Art course will be displayed at GENERATOR Projects.
