Dee-Con 2012 brings best of anime, comics and games to Dundee

Exclusive film screenings, tournaments, exhibitions, parties and appearances by top industry figures have been confirmed for Dee-Con 2012, one of the country's biggest celebrations of anime, comics and video games.

Dee-Con will take place at Dundee University Students Association (DUSA) on Saturday, 7th April, and six venues within the union will play host to events.

Dee-Con has grown in popularity year-on-year, with almost 2000 fans, many decked out in costume, turning out for the 2011 event. The day-long event is completely free and open to all members of the public.

A gallery selling work from 50 artists will be located in DUSA'S Mono hall, which will also host a Cosplay competition where participants can win top prizes, and a demonstration of the Japanese martial art Kendo.

Official badges, posters and t-shirts will be for sale in DUSA reception, along with tickets for the legendary after-party. The Liar Bar will play host to a series of video game tournaments. Visitors to the Liar will also be able to have their picture taken in costume by a professional photographer providing backdrops and lighting to allow fans to replicate scenes from their favourite films or games.

Talks and demonstrations from renowned industry figures will take place in the DUSA Meeting Room all day. The University's Dr Chris Murray, one of the UK's foremost experts on comics, respected artist DestinyBlue, and Andrew Partridge, director of the acclaimed 'Scotland Loves Anime' festival, are among those who will be appearing.

Air Bar is the officially designated Chill Zone, while Floor 5 will screen licensed films throughout the day. At night, it will buzz to 'chiptune' music and projections from Comptroller & Edward Shallow and a full audio/visual DJ set from 4Matt at the afterparty.

Dee-Con 2012 is being organised by Kieran Duncan and Mark Grossi, 4th Year students on the Animation programme at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design, part of the University. Kieran said they were looking forward to meeting Anime and art fans from across Scotland, and even further afield.

"With less than a week until Dee-Con we're really excited about all the events we've got lined up for the community," he said. "We've tried to get as much variation in there as possible, from artist exhibitions and industry processional seminars, to licensed film screenings and a wild after-party. There really is something for everyone.

"We've made contact with fans from across the country because they form a tight community and this is something that will really appeal to them. It's great fun, and people really get into the spirit of things by dressing up. Even if you are curious about Anime rather than being a fanatic, this is shaping up to be a great day and anybody is welcome."

The University is home to the UK's first degree programme in Comics Studies, and Dr Murray and his colleagues will be taking part in several Dee-Con events, along with illustrators and animators from DJCAD.

Dee-Con 2012 takes place from noon until 2.30am on Saturday, 7th April, at Dundee University Students Association. All daytime events are free, and open to all. Tickets for the afterparty cost £4 and are restricted to over-18s only. All money raised will go towards funding the Animation programme's Degree Show activities.
