'Victorian Dundee: Image and Realities' - public lecture on 17th November

The true history of Victorian Dundee will be discussed in a public lecture being held this Thursday to celebrate the launch of a new book that explores the era.

The second edition of 'Victorian Dundee: Image and Realities' has just been released, and is edited by Christopher Whatley, Bob Harris and Louise Miskell. Christopher Whatley, Professor of Scottish History at the University of Dundee, will be joined by Professors Rob Duck and Charles McKean to discuss how this title challenges the myth of Dundee as a town merely characterised by its Jute industry.

They have found that Dundee had diverse civic dynamics, architectural triumphs, and burgeoning art communities that flourished as the backdrop to the later jute industry that would come to define Victorian Dundee.

The book, initially published in 2000, was the first significant output from the History of Dundee project, which was inaugurated by the University in 1997. The new edition is published by Dundee University Press (DUP).

The new edition contains additional chapters and is also lavishly illustrated with over forty new images. This edition includes two completely new chapters: one that deals with Dundee's ancient waterfronts and the other that reveals Dundee's local heroes. In addition, the original chapters have been revised and updated.

'This event is a fantastic opportunity for anyone with an interest in the history of Dundee to hear from academics who have spent years researching the subject,' said Anna Day, Director of DUP.

'In particular, it is a chance to hear about the true history of Victorian Dundee, rather than the commonly held myths which have grown up since that period. Chris, Charles and Rob are engaging and lively speakers, and I'm sure the lecture will be informative and interesting.'

The lecture takes place at the University’s Dalhousie Building from 6-7pm, and will be followed by a book signing.

Free tickets can be obtained in advance by calling 01382 384413 or visiting the University's Online Store. They will also be available on the night.
