Dundee's city centre businesses are backing the development of the V&A at Dundee as a major boost for the city's future.

Members of the DD One umbrella organisation which consults with more than 400 businesses in the city will be given an exclusive presentation by Philip Long, Director of the V&A at Dundee, at the University of Abertay Dundee on Tuesday November 15th.

'The V&A at Dundee is clearly a very exciting opportunity for the whole city of Dundee,' said Derek Little, from Walker Luxury Jewellers and Chair of DD One.

'City Centre businesses welcome this unique asset and worthy addition to Dundee's Waterfront development. We are all keen to work alongside V&A at Dundee to enhance Dundee's vibrancy and economic prospects and raise the city’s standing as a regional visitor and shopping destination.'

Dr Gary Mulholland, Associate Director of Innovation and Enterprise at Abertay University’s Dundee Business School, said, 'The V&A at Dundee is an incredible project that is central to the ambitious plans for the Dundee Waterfront. As an internationally recognised brand, bringing the V&A to the banks of the Tay is a once-in-a-generation chance to massively expand Dundee as a tourist destination - and to bring benefits to businesses across the city.

'Abertay University's Dundee Business School is proud to be working with DD One on making sure businesses large and small can get the maximum benefit from this incredible opportunity - whether that’s offering entertainment, restaurants, shopping or many, many other business opportunities.

'We’re delighted to welcome Philip Long, Director of the V&A at Dundee, to Abertay University to speak to the members of DD One and we all look forward to working together to grow Dundee into a vibrant global tourist destination.'

The V&A at Dundee is being delivered by Design Dundee Ltd, a ground-breaking partnership between the Victoria and Albert Museum - the world’s greatest museum of art and design - and Dundee City Council, the Universities of Dundee and Abertay Dundee, and Scottish Enterprise.

Design Dundee Ltd is aiming to create a landmark building, which will be sited at Craig Harbour right on the banks of the River Tay. The site is being made available through the Dundee Central Waterfront Partnership, the joint venture between Dundee City Council and Scottish Enterprise which is revitalising the prime area of land linking the city centre with the River Tay.

An international design competition for the V&A at Dundee building was won by the Japanese practice Kengo Kuma & Associates.

The building will create a world-class public space that celebrates the creative culture of design, the evolution of design, its role in our lives, its economic impact and its commercial relevance.

Philip Long, Director of the V&A at Dundee, said, 'It is extremely heartening to know that the business community in Dundee is showing such positive backing for our project. As well as a cultural attraction, the V&A at Dundee is also a project aimed at boosting economic development in the city and wider region Dundee.'
