Professor Allan Struthers, of the University of Dundee Medical School, is among 40 of the United Kingdom’s leading medical researchers who have been recognised for excellence in medical science with their election to the Fellowship of the Academy of Medical Sciences.

Academy Fellows are elected for outstanding contributions to the advancement of medical science, for innovative application of scientific knowledge or for their conspicuous service to healthcare.

Professor Sir John Bell FRS HonFREng PMedSci, President of the Academy of Medical Sciences said, 'These new Fellows demonstrate the amazing talent present in the UK biomedical community. Thanks to these exceptional individuals the UK is home to some of the best medical science in the world. I am delighted that the Academy can recognise the vital role each one of them has played in delivering health and wealth benefits to the UK and beyond.

'Their work has ensured scientific discoveries make rapid progress from the laboratory bench to the patient’s bedside and I look forward to working with them.'

Allan Struthers is Professor of Cardiovascular Medicine, based at the University’s School of Medicine in Ninewells Hospital.

'I am delighted to receive this Fellowship from the Academy of Medical Sciences in London,' said Professor Struthers. 'It is a great tribute to all the staff who have contributed to my research programme over the years. A particular thanks must go to the hundreds of patients in Tayside who have volunteered so willingly to take part in our clinical research studies over the last 20 years, including especially to those who have taken part in more than one study each.'

The expertise of the new Fellows spans cardiac surgery, medicinal chemistry, respiratory medicine, health services research, medical jurisprudence, global health and infectious disease.

The new Fellows will be formally admitted to the Academy at a ceremony on Wednesday 29 June 2011.

This year Fellows were chosen from 361 candidates. The seven Sectional Committees met in March to consider potential Fellows for 2011 entry to the Academy. Three nominators from within the Fellowship must back each candidate. The Academy Registrar Professor Patrick Maxwell, Professor of Medicine, University College London, oversees the election. The election brings the number of Fellows to 1023.

The independent Academy of Medical Sciences promotes advances in medical science and campaigns to ensure these are translated into benefits for patients. The Academy’s Fellows are the United Kingdom’s leading medical scientists from hospitals, academia, industry and the public service.
