BUCS Conference Cup Finals

Photo opportunity: 6pm on Wednesday, 23rd March at the Institute of Sports and Exercise, University of Dundee. Medals and trophies will be presented to leading student athletes from across Scotland after the Men’s Basketball Final.

The University of Dundee will tomorrow host the biggest student sports event to be held in Scotland this year.

Over 300 student competitors in 29 teams from 11 institutions will descend on the campus to compete in 14 Cup Finals at the British Universities and Colleges (BUCS) Conference Cup Finals.

The BUCS Conference Cup Finals provide the high point of the inter-university sporting calendar in Scotland and the success of last year’s event - which the University also hosted - saw the organising body, Scottish Universities Sport (SUS), decide to return to the city for a second year.

Professor Pete Downes, Principal of the University, said, 'I am delighted once again to welcome the BUCS Conference Cup Finals to the University of Dundee following last year’s successful hosting of the event. Sport has a key role in supporting the vision of this University and in creating a first class student experience.'

There is plenty of local interest in the event, with four Dundee University teams having successfully negotiated their way to their respective finals. At Riverside Sports Grounds, the Men’s Football side will take on Napier at 1pm while Dundee will face Aberdeen in the Women’s Hockey event at the same time.

One of the highlights of the day is the Men’s Basketball final, where local rivals Dundee and Abertay will meet at 4pm in the Institute of Sport and Exercise. The fixture is always a very competitive and close contest and, with Dundee having won bragging rights in last week’s Tay Varsity Challenge match, the Basketball Final promises to provide an exciting and fitting finale to the day’s competition.

Dundee’s Men’s Rugby team are also in action and will travel to Murrayfield for their final against Glasgow Caledonian University, having enjoyed a successful season which saw them win their league and gain promotion to BUCS Tier 1.

The presentation of the medals and trophies will take place at the Institute of Sport and Exercise after the Men’s Basketball Final at 6pm.
