Hundreds to attend medical visit day

Hundreds of school pupils from across the UK and Ireland with an interest in studying medicine at the University of Dundee will visit the city tomorrow (Wednesday June 22nd).

The School of Medicine visit day for potential students is expected to welcome around 400 prospective applicants.

'We are delighted to welcome potential students to Dundee and let them see what we do here,' said Professor Gary Mires, Dean of Teaching in the School of Medicine. 'Dundee is consistently rated as one of the top medical schools in the UK and demand for places continues to be very high – we have around 10 applications for every place available to study here.'

Those attending the visit day will be welcomed to the University by Professor Mires before hearing from professionals and current students.

The full programme for the day is:

  • 09.00 : (from) Registration for morning visitors
    (Venue - Promenade Area, Medical School)
  • 09.30 : Welcome to the Medical School and the University

    A personal account from Dr. Bill Morrison, Accident and Emergency
  • 10.15 : Studying medicine in Dundee part 1
    How medicine is taught at the University of Dundee,
    Dr. Karen McKelvie. Clinical Skills
  • 11.00 : Studying medicine in Dundee part 2
    Two current medical students, Fiona Stark and Lloyd Hughes, will speak about life as a medical student at University.
  • 11.30 : Applying to study medicine at the University of Dundee
    Dr. Jon Dowell, Convener, Medical Admissions Committee, University of Dundee will discuss the assessment and selection process.
  • 12.15 : Questions and Answers
    Dr. Jon Dowell will answer questions on any aspect of applying to Dundee.
  • 12.30 : Close
  • 12.45 + 13.00 : Tours of the School of Medicine, in the company of current students
