Dundee in world's top 100 for Medicine and Biological Sciences

The University of Dundee has been named as one of the top 100 universities in the world for Medicine and Biological Sciences in the latest QS World University Rankings by Subject.

The University was ranked 58th in the world for Medicine and 66th for Biological Sciences in the annual survey. With a methodology tailored to fit each subject, the rankings are based on Academic Reputation, Employer Reputation and Citations per Paper.

The methodology has been changed since 2010 to allow more detailed analysis at subject level. This has seen Dundee climb from 82 for Biological Sciences, which last year included Medicine.

The QS World University Rankings is a ranking of the world’s top 500 universities by international education company Quacquarelli Symonds. The full positions for 2011, taking all subject areas into account, will be published later this year. The rankings come the day after the University was named as one of the best places in the world to work in academia by The Scientist magazine.

Professor Pete Downes, Principal and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Dundee, said he was delighted with the rankings, and that they recognised Dundee’s well established, internationally recognised, strengths in Medicine and Life Sciences.

'To be identified as one of the world’s top 100 universities for both Medicine and Biological Sciences is a fantastic achievement and we welcome these rankings,' he said.

'This reflects the excellent international reputation that the University of Dundee enjoys in these subjects. Coming so soon after The Scientist once again voted us as one of the best places in the world to work in academia, this shows just how well regarded Dundee is as an international centre of excellence in Medicine and Life Sciences.'

With more than 800 staff and research students and external funding in excess of £30 million per year, Dundee’s College of Life Sciences is one of the largest and most productive research institutes in Europe. It has an international reputation for excellence in life sciences and carries out world-leading medical research into a number of diseases including cancer, diabetes, cardiovascular disease and tropical diseases.

The University’s top-rated School of Medicine boasts one of the largest medical research complexes in the UK, and research expanding from 'the cell to the clinic to the community'. Its guiding principle is to develop and maintain excellence in research within an environment where interdisciplinary teams work together to tackle fundamental problems in human health.

Investment in teaching and facilities helps ensure graduates from the College of Life Sciences and School of Medicine go on to make an exceptional contribution to their fields.

The University was yesterday named as the UK’s ‘Best Place to Work in Academia’, and one of the world’s best, in the annual worldwide survey compiled by The Scientist magazine.

Readers of the influential magazine rated Dundee sixth in their list of international institutions (outside of the USA), three places ahead of the next highest placed UK institution. It is the second year in a row that the University has been identified as the best place in the UK for scientists to work, and it has been a regular feature in the list of top 10 international institutions since the survey was launched nine years ago.
