Student curators to re-interpret old objects in new exhibition

Work by students from Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design features alongside items from the University of Dundee’s collection in the inaugural exhibition organised by a new Student Curatorial Team.

A preview of 'Collection(s) Part 1' will be held this evening, before the exhibition opens to the public at the Lower Foyer Gallery, DJCAD, from tomorrow until Saturday, 5th March. The student curators successfully applied to be part of the team who will work with Exhibitions at DJCAD, part of the University, to curate the Gallery during the 2010/11 academic year.

They raided the collection held by the University’s Museum Services for items relating to mathematics and science currently not being displayed, and have exhibited them alongside contemporary work by students in order to explore our relationship to objects in different contexts.

One object they selected is an entirely black globe. Its original use is not clear, but an enigmatic crack resembling a longitudinal line has established itself on the surface of the paint over time. One of the students who has produced work for the exhibition is Lisadora Mason-Chadburn. Her sculptural work includes plaster cast objects, modeled on the ideas of American author, designer, inventor, and futurist Buckminster Fuller.

Katharine Reid, one of the Student Curatorial Team, said, 'Seeing the objects in the University of Dundee Museum Collections was the inspiration for the exhibition.

'We were really interested in the fact that they were out of use and we wanted to re-present them alongside art works so that the audience could appreciate them in a different way.'

Exhibitions at DJCAD is responsible for presenting projects across five galleries at the college, as well as the Visual Research Centre in Dundee Contemporary Arts. They chose to involve students in this year’s programme and challenged interested parties to answer the question 'What is Curation?' before selecting the Student Curatorial Team.

The students represent a number of programmes at DJCAD, including: Art, Philosophy, Contemporary Practices; Fine Art; Illustration; and Master of Fine Art.

A preview of 'Collection(s) Part 1' will be held at DJCAD from 5-7pm on Friday, 18th February. It will be open to the public from 9.30am-5pm (weekdays) and 10.30am-4.30pm (Saturdays) between 19th February and 5th March.

From 1pm on Tuesday, 1st March there will be a series of talks in the gallery. Those speaking include artist Janey Muir and Museum Services Curator Matthew Jarron, while Dr Beth Lord from the University’s Philosophy department will be asking 'What is a Museum Object? What is an Artwork?'

The exhibition will be followed by a second, workshop-based, phase of the project from 14th-18th March. This will see the museum pieces investigated through their re-animation as new-found art objects. The workshop will also analyse the importance of the archive through documentation of the event.

The workshop is open to all art and media students at DJCAD. More information about the workshop is available at www.exhibitions.dundee.ac.uk/programme_coming_soon.html.
