Second event award nomination for Degree Show

The 2011 Dundee Degree Show has been nominated for a prestigious industry award, the second such piece of recognition that Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design has received recently.

The 2011 Degree Show will compete in the Best Educational Event category of the UK Event Awards, which will take place in November. This follows a nomination for Best Marketing Strategy in the Scottish Event Awards.

The latter award ceremony takes place in Edinburgh on Thursday, 15th September. The Degree Show, which was held at DJCAD, part of the University of Dundee each May, is the city’s largest annual art exhibition and attracts an estimated 10,000 visitors each year.

Marketing manager Mhari MacDonald said she was delighted that DJCAD had received a second nomination, and attributed both to the hard work and all those involved in the Degree Show.

'It's fantastic that we have been nominated for a second award, and all the credit should go to everyone who worked so hard to make the Degree Show a success, including the students themselves,' she said.

'A lot of people worked incredibly hard behind the scenes before and during the exhibition, and they provided the perfect platform for our graduates to show they are among the best emerging artists and designers in the country. Hopefully we can now go and win these awards, but we know we are facing stiff competition.'

Also nominated in the same category of the UK Event Awards are Aberdeen Asset Management Universities Boat Race, RCGP Annual Primary Care Conference, and York Conferences. The venue and date of the ceremony will be announced shortly.

The innovative marketing strategy which saw DJCAD nominated for the Scottish Event Award utilised social media to allow final year students to help design the promotional material for their own Degree Show. The artwork was created by illustrator Johanna Basford, herself a DJCAD graduate, using 'crowd sourced' images.

Johanna is known for creating interactive illustrations by asking people to suggest the content for her drawings. By joining a specially created Facebook group, students were able to contribute by sharing memories of their time at DJCAD. They were invited to upload photos, share links to items or events, or posts suggestions on the page’s wall.

More than 70 submissions, including pictures taken on exchange trips, memories of tutors and even talking dogs, were then translated to the page and appeared on invitations, posters, advertisements and other material.
