Long-serving Life sciences lecturer retires
Photo opportunity: 5pm on Thursday, September 30th at the Carnelley Building, University of Dundee. Colleagues will say goodbye to Dr Allan Jones, who will be retiring after 40 years at the University.
A popular member of the University of Dundee’s academic staff will retire tomorrow after more than 40 years service.
Dr Allan Jones, Senior Lecturer in Ecology, Environmental Sciences and Zoology, will bid farewell to colleagues at the Basement Staff Room of the Carnelley Building at 5pm on Thursday, September 30th.
Dr Jones (65) was born and raised in Pembroke, South Wales, and studied Zoology at what was then the University College Wales in Aberystwyth. He moved to Dundee in 1970 to take up a post in the Biological Sciences Institute, now part of the College of Life Sciences.
His teaching skills have been recognised with several accolades over the years, including being named a Chancellors Award Fellow (2008/9) for 'lifetime contributions to Teaching', and becoming a recipient of the University’s Graduates Council "Innovations in teaching award" in 1995 and 1998.
Dr Jones also worked as an Educational Consultant and Advisor, is a former editor-in-chief of the Biosciences Education e-journal, and was also formerly Director of Staff Development
Life Sciences at the University have experienced enormous growth and change during Dr Jones’ time in Dundee, and he says he will miss the daily interaction with students.
'I’ll still be working as an external examiner, giving talks and working in staff development, but dealing with students every day is something I’ll miss enormously,' he said.
'I’ve also got hobbies like music, photography and art to keep me occupied so finding something to do with my time won’t be a problem!'
Dr Jones lives in Monikie with his wife Angela. The couple have grown-up twin sons who work in London.
