The 2010 class of sports scholars at the University of Dundee will be officially welcomed on to the programme this evening (Monday October 25th).
The Sport Scholarship programme at the University has been running for over 10 years. It aims to assist high performing athletes to achieve their full potential in the sporting and academic arenas, raise the profile and reputation of the University and the athletes themselves in the sporting arena, and improve Dundee’s performance in the BUCS (British Universities and Colleges Sport) rankings.
This year two teams - Men’s Hockey and Women’s Volleyball - have received team scholarships, with another 12 individual scholarships being awarded over a range of sports from athletics and cycling to alpine skiing and karate.
The Sports Scholarship programme is run by ise (the University’s Institute for Sport and Exercise) in association with the student Sports Union.
Teams and individuals on the programme receive a range of help and services including finance, strength and conditioning training, and sports science support.
'We have a range of tremendously gifted athletes and teams here at the University and we are delighted to be able to support them through the Scholarship programme,' said Helen Weavers, Sport Scholarship Co-ordinator.
The sports scholars will be welcomed into the programme at a reception tonight, taking place from 6.30pm at ise, Old Hawkhill.
