Staff give students a lesson in University Challenge

The third annual University Challenge quiz at the University of Dundee ended last night with the staff team delivering a real lesson to their students.

The series was tied at 1-1 before last night's contest and another close encounter was expected but a staff team led by University Secretary Dr Jim McGeorge flexed their academic muscles to run away with a 200-point win, by 390 to 190.

The event, held in the Dalhousie Building, helped raise hundreds of pounds for this year's chosen charity, the Disasters Emergency Committee. DEC is an umbrella organisation for thirteen humanitarian aid agencies including Oxfam, Islamic relief and the British Red Cross. The DEC's latest appeal is for the floods in Pakistan, where over 20 million people have been affected. They have also been raising money in the aftermath of the Haiti earthquake as well as Vietnam, the Philippines and Indonesia.

Hundreds of pounds was also raised through events held by two of the student societies at the University, the International Society and Action Palestine.

Joining Dr McGeorge in the winning staff team, and no doubt set to brag to all of their students for the next year, were English lecturer Dr Brian Hoyle, Dr David Edwards from the Dental School, and Dr Beth Lord, from Philosophy.
