Top companies line up for Dundee ideas day
Photo opportunity: 4pm on Friday, 5th November at Product Design Studios, Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design. Students will be debating the technological breakthroughs of the coming decade with representatives of some of the world’s biggest companies.
Product Design students from the University of Dundee will this Friday debate what life will be like in 10 years time with some of the biggest names in the digital media industry.
The annual Ideas Day is organised by Dr Jon Rogers, Product Design Course Director at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design, part of the University. Students will debate the question, 'How do we get to 2020?' with an esteemed panel of industry experts, including representatives of Microsoft and Nokia, two of the biggest companies in the world.
The Ideas Day takes place at the Product Design Studios, from 11am on Friday, 5th November, with the debate beginning at 4pm. The event proved massively popular during its second outing last year, and a large audience of students and academics is once again expected.
Dr Rogers explained that the students will gain a lot from Ideas Day and from brainstorming with some of the biggest names from industry.
'As part of their final-year projects, students are expected to research in order to identify rich problem areas and emerging opportunities for new products,' he said.
'Students are encouraged to identify an area of interest and expected to use a variety of research methods to highlight project issues and opportunities to drive design activity and ultimately to define insights. We strongly encourage students to work directly with users and experts to better understand their area of interest.
'This is what they will be doing on Friday. From these insights students are expected to generate in excess of 100 ideas from which they should select 20 representing their most original, engaging and appropriate thinking. During Ideas Day the students need to effectively and critically communicate the content and context of their work in a professional manner for engagement.'
Students will demonstrate evidence of the insights they gained as a result of conducting interviews, carrying out research, and developing experience prototypes. Their ideas will be critiqued by the people who inspired them.
During the panel session, Product Design students will be joined by undergraduates from other programmes at DJCAD who have asked to participate in the event.
The panel consists of:
- Abigail Sellen (Microsoft Research)
- Tim Regan (Microsoft Research)
- Richard Banks (Microsoft Research)
- Tim Brooke (Nokia Research)
- Henry Holland (Nokia Research)
- Bill Gaver (Goldsmiths)
- Chris Speed (Edinburgh College of Art)
- King Creosote (Fencecollective)
- Charlie Rohan (Head of Consumer Experience NCR)
They will consider a number of topics relating to life in 2020, including how we will learn, how we will date, and how we will work with particular reference to how new technology and products will change these aspects of our lives.
