US Foreign Policy the focus in the first of a new lecture series

Barack Obama's foreign policy will be examined during the first in a series of public lectures to be held at the University of Dundee to showcase the range of Humanities research taking place across the UK.

The Arts & Humanities Research Institute (AHRI) Lecture Series will begin on Wednesday, 24th November, when visiting speaker Professor John Dumbrell from Durham University discusses ‘President Obama and New Directions in US Foreign Policy'.

The rest of the series will see some of the UK's most eminent academics from the Humanities talk about a fascinating array of topics. The events are as follows:

  • 16th February: Dame Professor Gillian Beer - 'Late Darwin and the Descent of Woman'.
  • 23rd March: Professor Keith Thomas - 'Heritage or History? Conflicting Views of the Past'.
  • 18th May 2011: Jonathan Rée - 'Varieties of Disenchantment: the question of God in historical perspective'.

Professor Nicholas Davey, Dean of the School of Humanities at Dundee, said he hoped that students, staff, and anyone with an interest in the Humanities would engage with the series.

'It is vital that the School of Humanities shares its research with the communities that support us, whether they be academics we cooperate with, schools and colleges we recruit from, or interest groups with which we share common concerns,' he said.

'It is with both pleasure and pride that we open our doors for all to participate in this notable programme of lectures and discussions. There will be a very warm welcome for all.'

All lectures take place at the D'Arcy Thomspon Lecture Theatre from 6pm on the relevant dates. Admission is free and open to all.
