Storytelling the focus of family fun day at Botanic Garden
The University of Dundee’s Botanic Garden will next Sunday play host to a family fun day featuring storytelling activities, craft workshops, story games and walks around the picturesque venue.
The event is being organised by Blether Tay-Gither, a local storytelling group comprising University students and staff as well as professional storytellers and enthusiastic amateurs from throughout Tayside and Fife.
Blether Tay-Gither member Debbie Maxwell, a PhD student at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design, part of the University, said a similar event held last year had proved to be a great success.
'Last year we saw around 50 children come along with their parents and take part in the activities over the course of the day,' she said. 'Everyone had a great time and we’re hoping for a similar success this year.
'There is lots to see and do. This year’s event features more storytellers and a special story trail game is planned. There is something for all ages, from singing rhymes and stories for wee ones to tales for big kids too!'
'We believe storytelling is for everyone, not just children. It’s how we communicate and is a key means to share and celebrate culture and understanding in both local and international settings.
'There is always a great mix of stories, from fantastical original tales to traditional folktales, poetry recitals, anecdotes and songs, all washed down with our trademark blether and laughter.'
Blether Tay-Gither is a vibrant group of storytellers of all ages and experiences. Established three years ago, the club holds monthly storytelling evenings around Dundee, Tayside and Fife, as well as an evolving program of training workshops and family events. It also participates in local and community events and festivals.
The family fun day takes place at the Botanic Garden, Riverside Drive, from 10am-4pm on Sunday, May 16th. Admission is £2 for adults and free for children.
