Degree Show 2010
This year's Dundee Degree Show, featuring the work of more than 250 Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design (DJCAD) students, will get underway on May 22nd.
Students from all 11 undergraduate programmes will exhibit the fruits of their labours at DJCAD, part of the University of Dundee.
They will also celebrate their impending graduation by showing their work in the exhibition, which this year returns to its traditional home at the Perth Road art college. The show takes place throughout the two buildings and fourteen floors that comprise DJCAD, with every spare space exhibiting art and design.
The show, attracts thousands of visitors to the University and is seen as a springboard for some of Scotland’s most exciting emerging artists. DJCAD has a reputation as one of the leading art schools in the UK and many of its students go on to be world renowned artists. Susan Phillipsz, a Dundee Fine Art alumnus who was earlier this week nominated for the Turner Prize.
Acting Dean of DJCAD, Professor Tracy Mackenna, said she was sure that this year's show would once again prove a great success.
'The annual degree show at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design showcases the remarkable talent and creativity of our students from a wide range of disciplines,' she said.
'What we see, year after year, is that our students continue to push the boundaries of art and design and to challenge convention. I am confident that everyone who visits will leave hugely impressed by what they have seen.'
The Degree Show 2010 will be officially launched with an Industry Event at Dundee University Students Association on Thursday, May 20th. An all-ticket Preview Evening for students, their families and invited guests will take place the following night.
The exhibition will be open to the public from Saturday, May 22nd until Sunday, May 30th. Admission is free and the exhibition is open from 10am until 8pm (Monday - Friday) and 10am to 4pm (Saturday - Sunday).
The annual Degree Show is one of the highlights of the city’s cultural calendar and attracted nearly 11,000 visitors last year, generating an estimated £1.5million for the local economy in the process.
Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design has been rated as the top art school in Scotland and in the top four in the UK according to the latest Research Assessment Exercise (RAE).
DJCAD is at the forefront of the 'V&A at Dundee’ project that will create a statement building on Dundee’s newly developing waterfront. This will house contemporary collections from the world-famous Victoria & Albert Museum alongside other major exhibitions, as well as showcasing design practice and research.
This £47million project is expected to create around 900 jobs locally, bring thousands of visitors to Dundee each year, and transform the city’s waterfront.
