Accountancy masters is the first in UK to receive ACCA accreditation

A new University of Dundee postgraduate accountancy programme has become the first Masters degree in the UK to receive full accreditation from the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA).

The MSc Professional Accountancy focuses on the technical and theoretical study of fundamental accounting subjects together with a professional project within the international context of accounting practice.

The ACCA is an international professional accountancy body, and the Dundee course is the first UK postgraduate qualification to combine Masters level study with full professional body accreditation from the organisation.

Programme director Dr Louise Crawford, from the University's School of Accounting & Finance, explained that the launch of the degree will complement the School’s current portfolio of Masters programmes by enabling students to focus their postgraduate study on the accountancy profession, and in so doing, attract professional body accreditation.

'Many overseas accounting students, for example from India and China, hold undergraduate degrees that do not attract professional body accreditation,' she said.

'This degree programme offers such graduates the chance to attain a postgraduate qualification combined with full professional body accreditation from a global professional accountancy body.

'There is also potential for individuals with appropriate practitioner experience, but who are not professionally qualified, to access this programme. It is anticipated that this programme will be very attractive to international accounting graduates and national experienced practitioners.'

The School of Accounting & Finance at Dundee last month launched a new MSc Islamic Accounting & Finance course, the first of its kind at any Scottish university.

By aiding the development of highly trained staff with a knowledge of Islamic accounting and finance practices and theories, the School will also help to address a significant skills shortage created by the rapid global expansion of interest in Islamic banking in recent years.

A number of universities in the UK offer courses in Islamic finance but they tend to concentrate on banking and economics. What makes Dundee quite unique is the emphasis on accounting as well.
