NCR works with University of Dundee to explore multi-touch self-service applications

NCR names NCR Multi-Touch Programming Competition winner for 2010

NCR Corporation (NYSE: NCR) has named the winners of a competition to explore the application of multi-touch technologies to future self-service devices from the School of Computing at the University of Dundee.

Stuart Birse, Kate Saunderson, Paul Gault and Cora Albrecht came up with the idea of digitising post-it note brainstorming processes. Content - including text, data, video and photos - can be created on the multi-touch computer, a laptop or mobile phone and easily uploaded onto multi-touch device. A team of people is then able to tag, stack, group and highlight items using gestures. This type of application could be used in the workplace or universities to help people come up with creative ideas and improve teamworking.

Teams of Dundee students were competing to develop the best new concept solutions which harness the 'power of touch' to understand how consumers will interact more naturally and effectively through self-service channels in the future. The students presented their ideas in a Dragon's Den-style competition judged by NCR and the University.

Multi-touch technologies, such as touchscreens on mobiles and computers, free people from the constraints of a keyboard or mouse and enables them to access, move, rotate, expand and combine digital content more easily. NCR already uses touch-screen technology in self-service technology such as ATMs, self-checkouts and kiosks. Multi-touch technology will enable people to share digital content and collaborate in ways society is only just beginning to explore.

Mark Grossi, VP NCR Labs explains, 'Today's university students are the wealth generators of tomorrow. They've grown up in a world where technology plays a central role in everyday life. Through this competition, we're giving Dundee students an insight into the concepts NCR is developing and to get their perspectives on how multi-touch technologies can be applied to improve the next generation of self-service interactions.'

Professor Peter Gregor, Dean, School of Computing, said, 'NCR's sponsorship of this competition continues to give students access to cutting edge technology which helps them develop highly marketable skills. Through competitions like this, and their active participation in the University's Advisory Boards, NCR has the reassurance that our course content is aligned with industry needs and is able to tap into academia's expertise and the aspirations of the next generation of consumers.'

NCR's Discovery Centre in Dundee designed and developed the latest NCR SelfServ ATM global product line and advanced technologies, such as fingerprint biometrics to supplement PINs as a more secure identity authentication method. NCR Labs has also recently showcased a 'concept solution' that enables consumers to download information about a financial products from a smart poster onto their mobile phone and use a multi-touch computer to populate a digital application form with their data.

NCR's on-going university partnership programme includes the NCR consumer experience design competition for Scottish students. NCR also collaborates with the University of Abertay on its 'ethical hacking' course and 'Dare to be Digital' computer gaming competition.
