New designers provides opportunities for design graduates
Nearly 100 graduating students from Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design will next month display their work at the prestigious New Designers exhibition in London.
Fresh from the success of the 2010 Dundee Degree Show, the students will be showing their work at the exhibition, which takes place at the Business Design Centre in Islington from Thursday 1st until Friday 11th July. Every year, New Designers brings the design industry together and showcases the work of 3,500 graduates who are about to launch their careers to an audience of around 18,000.
In all, 91 graduands from the Product Design, Jewellery & Metal Design, Interactive Media Design, Illustration, Textile Design and Graphic Design programmes at DJCAD, part of the University of Dundee, will be exhibiting at the show.
Although not all students will be physically attending the show, a large number will head to London to make contacts, network, and compete with design graduates from across the UK for the many opportunities that New Designers offers.
Professor Tracy MacKenna, Acting Dean of DJCAD, said, 'New Designers is a fantastic chance for our students to showcase how their work can transform the way we think, and how design can address major cultural, social and environmental issues.
'By exhibiting, the students will make essential new contacts and spread DJCAD's and the University’s reputation as a leader in teaching and research.'
New Designers is visited by around 18,000 people each year, including some of the most important and influential figures in the design industry. This gives exhibitors the opportunity to develop contacts with trade professionals, potential employers and the media as well as having the chance to win awards, work placements and recognition.
A series of events will be held designed to provide graduates with the opportunity to gather information on how to get work, find funding and set up their own studios and practices.
New Designers is divided into two sections: Part 1 runs from July 1st until July 4th while Part 2 takes place from July 8th-11th. Students from the Jewellery & Metal Design and Textile Design courses will be exhibiting at Part 1 while Product Design, Graphic Design, Illustration and Interactive Media Design courses will be displaying their work during Part 2.
Most of the Dundee programmes have exhibited at New Designers before, with large numbers of students receiving offers of exhibitions, jobs, placements and commissions as a result, although this is the first time that Interactive Media Design have been involved.
Whilst in London, representatives of the programme will officially launch its new name, 'Digital Interaction Design', which more accurately reflects the content and objectives of the degree.
