Dundee Literary Festival - Day Three (25/06/10) Events schedule

Photo opportunities will be available at all the events taking place on Friday, June 25th.

Two new Honorary Graduates of the University of Dundee will be among those entertaining hundreds of book lovers during the third day of the 2010 Dundee Literary Festival.

Rosamunde Pilcher received her Honorary Degree on Tuesday, while Nick Cave is scheduled to have his conferred upon him on Friday morning. They will be appearing alongside other writers including Cynthia Rogerson, Lesley Glaister, and Richard Holloway.

The five-day celebration of literature is now in its fourth year. In that time, the University of Dundee-organised Festival has established itself as one of the highlights of the city's cultural calendar.

The full schedule for Friday, June 25th is:

  • Cynthia Rogerson (9am, free entry) - The Californian, who now lives in Ross-shire has written two novels and numerous short stories and poems. The award-winning writer will be reading from her latest novel I Love You Goodbye (set to be published in July) and discussing her life as a writer.
  • Creating History - the story of Canongate Publishing (10am-12pm, free entry) - Canongate is one of the most exciting, dynamic and innovative publishing houses in the world. Founder Stephanie Wolfe Murray will chat to publisher Jamie Byng, and some of the authors who have contributed to its success, including Michael Faber, Louise Welsh and Alasdair Gray. Kirsty Gunn, Professor of Creative Writing at the University, will chair the event.
  • Andrew Philip - Poem and a Piece (12.30pm, £5) - Philip will be reading from his incredibly moving first poetry collection, The Ambulance Box, which heralded the arrival of a passionate new voice in the literary world. Entry price includes a sandwich and a cup of tea or coffee.
  • Lesley Glaister (1.30pm, £3/£2 concession) - Glaister's novels are page-turning thrillers that grip the reader from the very first page. She will be reading from her 12th novel, Chosen, a tightly plotted tale of cults, 1970s subculture and relationships.
  • Rosamunde Pilcher (2.30pm, £3/£2 concessions) - The Grand Dame of novels began her career in 1949 and her books have sold millions of copies around the world. Her unsurpassed storytelling skills will be in evidence when she appears at this event.
  • Richard Holloway (3.30pm, £3/£2 concessions) - The writer, broadcaster and former Bishop of Edinburgh in the Scottish Episcopal Church will examine how poetry has helped him wrestle with three questions: what are we? Where do we come from? Where are we going?
  • Nick Cave (6pm, sold out) - The renowned musician, author, screenwriter, novelist, poet, actor and sometime philosopher will be appearing in Dundee to read from his latest book, The Death of Bunny Munro. He will also talk about what inspired the book and answer questions from members of the audience.

All events take place at the University's Dalhousie Building unless otherwise stated.
