Sir Robert Wilson appointed patron of Energy Centre
The University of Dundee is delighted to announce that Sir Robert Wilson, KCMG, has become the first Patron of the University’s Centre for Energy, Petroleum and Mineral Law and Policy (CEPMLP).
CEPMLP is an internationally-renowned, inter-disciplinary centre for post-graduate teaching and research in the energy and mineral sectors. It attracts more than 200 students each year from around the world to its Masters and Doctorate degree programmes, and carries out research in key areas of international concern relating to energy and mineral law, economics and policy.
As patron, Sir Robert will assist CEPMLP expand and deepen its already extensive links with the international energy and mining industries. Sir Robert has been a keen supporter of CEPMLP for almost a decade, since the time when he was Chief Executive of Rio Tinto plc. He received an Honorary Degree from the University in 2001.
'We are fortunate indeed to have attracted Sir Robert to become the first patron of our Centre for Energy, Petroleum and Mineral Law and Policy,' said Professor Pete Downes, Principal of the University of Dundee. 'With his help and support, the Centre's reputation as an internationally leading provider for interdisciplinary postgraduate teaching and research in the vitally important energy and mineral law sector will continue to grow'.
Sir Robert Wilson is currently Chairman of the BG Group, a major international energy company based in the UK. He has been Chairman of BG since 1st January 2004, having been a non-executive Director since September 2002. He was chairman of Rio Tinto plc from 1997 to 2003 and prior to that was chief executive between 1991 and 1997. He is also senior independent non-executive director of GlaxoSmithKline plc. He has previously been Chairman of The Economist Group and non-executive director of Diageo plc, BP plc and The Boots Company PLC (now Alliance Boots).
Sir Robert said, 'It gives me great pleasure to become the first Patron of CEPMLP and I very much look forward to providing advice and support in its very important work.'
CEPMLP Director, Professor Philip Andrews-Speed said 'Sir Robert Wilson’s long experience at the top of the international energy and mining industries makes him ideally positioned to guide us in our continuing efforts to increase CEPMLP’s engagement with industry and to improve the quality and relevance of our research and teaching.'
Sir Robert will simultaneously take on the role as Patron of the Energy, Petroleum, Mineral and Natural Resources Law and Policy Education Trust. The Trust was created in 1976 to promote the development of education and training in the field of oil and gas law, and was a key party in the establishment of CEPMLP in 1977. Today, the prime focus of the Trust is to support CEPMLP.
