Shrunken heads, Gory nursery rhymes and Rangers facing relegation - Dundee Masters Show 2010 continues
Featuring a nightmarish nursery rhyme, shrunken pig heads and a terminally ill Rangers manager who wants to go down in history as the man who got the Ibrox giants relegated, the range of exhibits at this year’s Dundee Masters Show are diverse to say the least.
More than 50 students from Masters courses at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design, part of the University of Dundee, are exhibiting at the event, which is open until Saturday, September 4th.
The Dundee Masters Show 2010 highlights work from some of the UK’s most exciting and innovative arts programmes, with conceptual, thought-provoking and vibrant exhibitions that push the boundaries of art from five Masters programmes - Design, Fine Art, Media Arts & Imaging, Medical Art and Forensic Art - on display.
Laura Whyte, who completed the Media Arts & Imaging programme, is the creator of Nursery Crimes, an animated horror/comedy about Little Bo Peep who has slaughtered her sheep, and doesn’t know where to hide them.
In the short film ‘The Akenhaten of Ibrox’, her classmate Charles Whatmore explores the parallels between Govan and ancient Egypt as a once confident and respected manager reveals how he replaced his diminishing faith in football with an unusual game designed to guarantee his place in infamy.
MSc Forensic Art graduate Tobias Houlton’s exhibit features pig heads shrunken using techniques deployed in the Shuar tribal custom of head shrinking. His Masters project saw him use facial analysis and depiction to prove that a shrunken head housed in the collection of The McManus was indeed human and not monkey in origin.
Jeanette Paul, Head of Postgraduate Studies at DJCAD, said these were just a few examples of the diverse, challenging and innovative exhibits on display.
'Every year, the exhibits at the Masters Show demonstrate the rich diversity of the work that students undertake at postgraduate level in art, media and design,' she said. 'The 2010 Show continues this trend and I would encourage as many people as possible to come along and check it out in person.
'The creative practice has a strong research foundation which infuses the work, resulting in focussed, intelligent and thought-provoking work that has allowed our students to build upon their creativity and technical ability.
'From multimedia, time-based and animation workthrough art installations and painting to innovative design solutions to contemporary issues, this Masters Show exhibits an incredible range of strong ideas and an enormous amount of talent.'
Admission to the Show is free, and the exhibition is open between 10am and 8pm each day until Saturday September 4th, when it will be open from 10am-1pm. Aspecial evening event to recognise the students’ achievements will be held on Friday, September 3rd.
