Launch of New Writing Dundee Five
An anthology of new writing from Dundee and across the globe is published today.
New Writing Dundee celebrates its fifth volume of poetry, prose and journalism with new work from Costa Book of the Year prize winner Christopher Reid as well as a contribution from the 2009 Saltire Society Literary Award winner Robert Crawford.
A short story by Adam Mars-Jones originally intended for inclusion in Pilcrow – his most recent novel which was short-listed for the Encore Award – will be featured alongside a short collection of poetry from the award winning New Zealand poet, Vincent O’Sullivan.
American writer Elisa Segrave has contributed excerpts from her memoirs while work from local authors Andrew Murray Scott and Kenneth Steven feature along with contributions by many more noted writers.
New Writing Dundee Five also includes an interview with the Scotsman Literary Editor, David Robinson, regarding his views on fiction, journalism and prose that can cross boundaries between the two.
Additionally, included in the 2010 edition are pieces from new and previously unpublished authors. This year New Writing Dundee received around 600 submissions, and the editorial staff narrowed down the work to forty pieces of poetry and prose.
This year’s publication will be launched on Thursday, April 22nd during a Literary Dundee Salon which will feature readings by Robert Crawford. The evening will begin at 5pm at Dundee Contemporary Arts with drinks and chat continuing until 7pm.
New Writing Dundee will also have several other events, including their very own spot at the Dundee Literary Festival on Wednesday, June 23rd from 6pm in the Dalhousie Building. This fun evening will not only feature New Writing Dundee stories through music and professional readings – including a reading by Christopher Reid – but it will also launch the festival.
This will also be a chance to purchase the book and meet several of the authors who contributed to the publication. Admission is free and drinks will be served. Also keep an eye on www.literarydundee.co.uk/salons.htm for a New Writing Dundee event in the fall, in which several of the publication’s authors will read from their work.
New Writing Dundee began life as a magazine exclusively written and edited by students but in 2007 took on a wider remit. With support from the University of Dundee's Creative Writing programme, the publication moved from being a thin magazine to a book accepting work from around the world.
Over time, New Writing Dundee became involved with Literary Dundee, was included in the Dundee Literary Festival, and in 2010 became the first publication to be a part of the new imprint, Discovery Press. The publication has grown from a small magazine to an internationally recognised anthology showcasing Dundee’s publishing potential.
Copies, costing £5, can be purchased from Waterstone’s store in Commercial Street, Dundee, or by contacting Anna Day, Director of Literary Dundee, on 01382 384413 or on a.c.day@dundee.ac.uk.
