Physicians gather in Dundee
The 104th Annual Meeting of the Association of Physicians of Great Britain & Ireland is being held at the University of Dundee today and tomorrow (April 15th and 16th).
Over 100 physicians from around the UK and Ireland are gathering in Dundee for the conference, one of the most prestigious medical gatherings in the UK.
'This annual meeting is a key focus for the promotion of clinical academic excellence, and we will hear presentations from some of the UK’s leading voices over the next two days, including Professor Sir David Lane and Professor Peter Boyle,' said Professor Irene Leigh, Head of the College of Medicine, Dentistry and Nursing at Dundee and Chair of the conference.
Professor Sir David Lane is giving the History of Medicine Lecture on the subject of 'Curing Cancer'. Professor Peter Boyle is delivering a Plenary Lecture on the subject of 'The Globalisation of Cancer'. These lectures are open to University and NHS staff and students. Professor Boyle's lecture takes place at 3.50pm on Friday, with Professor Lane's lecture following at 4.45pm, both in the Dalhousie Building at the University.
The Osler Lecture will be given by Professor Michael Ferguson, from the College of Life Sciences at Dundee, on the subject of 'Tackling Trypanosomes: Translating Basic Research into Drugs for Neglected Diseases'.
There will also be a Civic Reception in the McManus Galleries on Friday evening to mark the event.
The Association of Physicians of Great Britain, founded in 1907, and Ireland is a society of physicians of academic distinction, drawn mainly from medical schools in Britain and Ireland. It holds an annual scientific meeting at which research papers relevant to the practice of medicine are presented. The proceedings of the annual scientific meeting are published in the Quarterly Journal of Medicine, which had its origins as the Journal of the Association.
The Association, which held its first meeting in 1907, is a registered medical charity. The principle charitable activities include support for medical research projects in developing countries, through a Links with Developing Countries Scheme and sponsorship of intercalated degrees for medical students in universities in Britain and Ireland.
The meetings of the Association have always been characterised by presentations of the highest quality, and represent many of the best achievements of academic medicine throughout Britain and Ireland.
