Student makes money in design competition
Financially strapped students may dream of one day using their talent to make money, but one University of Dundee undergraduate is already doing exactly that.
Kristoffer Wilson (21) won one of this year’s MPA Roses Student Creativity Awards when he answered a brief to design new £5, £10, £20 and £50 banknotes to unify the UK's currency, landing him a much sought after placement with a top design agency in the process.
Kristoffer, originally from Kilsyth, is a third year Graphic Design student at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design, part of the University. His design represented each of the four constituent countries of the UK according to population size with England featuring on the £50 note, Scotland on the £20, Wales on the £10 and Northern Ireland on the £5.
The notes can be broken down into smaller denominations if the user does not have any change so, for example, the £50 note could be torn along perforated lines to create five new £10 notes.
Kristoffer says he is delighted to have won the competition, which attracted hundreds of entries from design students across the UK, and is looking forward to taking up his month-long work experience with Edinburgh company Tayburn, who set the ‘Money, Money, Money’ brief.
'This is the first award I’ve won for my work and so I’m really happy,' he said. 'It’s fantastic to receive recognition like this and it will hopefully help me when it comes to getting a job after graduation. The opportunity to work with Tayburn is a really good one as well, and I’m looking forward to the work experience.
'The idea first came to me when I was out having a meal with a group of friends. At the end there was a bit of confusion of how to split the money between us, all exchanging notes and coins in order to get the right amount made up, resulting in somebody saying out loud; ‘it would be good if we could just tear these notes up’.'
In total there were 10 student winners in various categories. Along with two other winners, Kristoffer will go on to compete for the coveted Gold Award which will be announced at the Roses Advertising awards on May 6th.
The awards are run by The Drum, an advertising, design, marketing and media trade publication, to recognise the best emerging talent across these industries.
The Student Roses format sees top creatives from 10 advertising and marketing agencies set briefs - some quirky and irreverent, others more conventional - for students. The brief that Kristoffer answered was set by Tayburn and required that the banknotes, as with coins and stamps, must feature the Queen’s image.
