Top position for Perth cardiologist
A Perth Royal Infirmary consultant cardiologist has been elected the new president of the Royal College of Physicians in Edinburgh it was announced yesterday. Dr Neil Dewhurst, an honorary senior lecturer in medicine at Dundee University, will take on the three-year role in March.

Dundee pupils' artwork will leave lasting impression
A project began yesterday which will see senior pupils at a Dundee local school shape their local environment. S6 pupils from Morgan Academy had their first session in the collaborative scheme with sculptors from the city's Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design.

Phoebe Caldwell wins Times/Sternberg Award for pioneering autism treatment
A woman aged 76 who has transformed the lives of thousands of families affected by autism has won this year's Times/Sternberg Award.
She was nominated by Suzanne Zeedyk, of Dundee University's school of psychology, whose students analysed every frame of one of her films to produce empirical evidence on her technique, known as intensive interaction.

Who is left to fly the flag?
With the collapse last week of FlyGlobespan, Scotland's biggest airline, plans are now in chaos.
At Dundee university, 58 third-year geography students were due to fly to Alicante for a field trip and had booked with FlyGlobespan. University officials are trying to rearrange the trip for later in the year but the students fear the disruption will impact on their studies.

On a visit to a clinic in Atlanta in the US recently, Christopher Barratt, professor of reproductive medicine at the University of Dundee, was shocked to find all the male patients were already taking supplements to optimise their health and sperm quality. 'There wasn't a single one that wasn't on something. They had got them off the internet.'

Television images of nurses as 'brainless, sex-mad bimbos' are putting young people off a career in nursing.
NHS Tayside's director of nursing, Professor Liz Wilson, presented research carried out by Dundee University when she spoke at today's meeting of NHS Tayside's staff governance committee at King's Cross Hospital, Dundee.
