A popular member of staff at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design retires later this week after 41 years of service to the institution.

Vina Sim joined the College in 1968 to work in the General Office. Over a period of almost 25 years she filled a variety of roles across Duncan of Jordanstone, including spells in the School of Architecture and Student Services offices.

Since the early 1990’s she has worked as receptionist at the College, now part of the University of Dundee, becoming a well known and liked figure amongst both students and staff.

Vina (65) was born in Dundee and attended Stobswell Girl’s School. After leaving school in 1959, she worked with a number of different employers before joining Duncan of Jordanstone.

She says she hopes not to have any time to miss the job, as her retirement celebrations will begin with a cruise and activities will fill the leisure time she is set to enjoy.

'I’m about to begin a portraiture class and I’m also learning Italian,' she explained. 'I've joined a Spa, although I haven’t had time to go yet, and I plan on taking lots of holidays'

Dean of the College, Professor Georgina Follett paid tribute, saying, 'Vina is the ‘face’ of Duncan of Jordanstone. She is the first person you meet when you enter our building, and is a unique and unforgettable individual.'

'Vina is going to be sorely missed by all, and she gives a welcoming warmth to the otherwise stern façade of the buildings. I would like to wish her a wonderful retirement and would ask her to make sure that she keeps in touch. The College will not be the same again.'

Vina's status at Duncan of Jordanstone was emphasised earlier this year when student Carolyn Scott chose the popular receptionist as the subject for her entry to 'Picturing Dundee - The University of Dundee Photography Competition’ as an image that encapsulated the essence of the University. The image won second prize and helped cemented Vina's place in University history.
