Pupils map out road to good health

Primary school pupils from Dundee will be at Ninewells Hospital on Friday to receive prizes they won in an art competition that challenged them to think about issues relating to health care.

The pupils, from St Joseph’s, Our Lady’s and Ardler primary schools, will attend the Clinical Skills Centre at 12pm to receive certificates and see posters bearing their winning entries, which will be used in promotional material for the University of Dundee’s School of Nursing & Midwifery.

The project, My Art Project (MAP for Life), provided primary 4 to 7 pupils with an insight into the world of nursing and associated areas such as the provision of care across the world and global citizenship.

It was run by the School of Nursing & Midwifery and the University Library & Learning Centre in partnership with Dundee City Council’s Education Department. Pupils were given different words relating to the topic, and were asked to carry out a “mind-mapping” exercise to explore all the related issues and considerations.

Heather Marr, of the School of Nursing & Midwifery, said members of staff came up with the idea of developing the art competition for primary school pupils.
in order to raise the profile of nursing whilst planting seeds amongst children who might consider nursing as a career.

“This will help raise the profile of the School and nursing as a profession, not just with the pupils but also friends and family,” she said. “This collaboration has formed the foundation for other work between the School and the Education department.”

The posters will be displayed at the School of Nursing and Midwifery recruitment events and open days, in the relevant schools and uploaded onto the MAP for Life picture gallery.

1st Rory Brennan - St Joseph's Primary
2nd Titisari Setiadji - Our Lady's Primary
=3rd Katie Downes - Ardler Primary
= 3rd Mate Csetenyi - St Joseph's primary
