Dundee expert gets grant for cancer study
A Dundee-based researcher has been given a £194,000 grant to study the role of dietary fats in breast cancer. Dr Colin Palmer, based at Dundee University, has discovered a receptor within cells in the breast that binds certain types of fats and appears to directly control tumour growth.

A retiral celebration was held at Ninewells Hospital yesterday for a surgeon with over 40 years' service. Mr Wood was appointed a senior lecturer at Dundee University in 1976.

An acclaimed Dundee scientist has been awarded the Scottish Crop Research Institute Peter Massalski Prize for meritorious research. Dr Roberts is a fellow of the Royal Microscopical Society, a Scottish Enterprise Tayside science ambassador to Scottish schools and an honorary lecturer and examiner for Dundee University.

Strange stories about city abound
Author and publisher Sharon McPherson was at the Dundee branch of Waterstone's on Commercial Street last night to sign copies of her new book, Dew on the Law and Other Strange Stories about a Scottish City. Ms McPherson, who writes under the pseudonym Cambrella McMahon, set up Pumpkin Press in 2006, while a literature student at Dundee University.

Honorary degree for journalist held by gunmen in Middle East
Journalist Alan Johnston is to be awarded an honorary degree by his former university, it was announced yesterday. He will be honoured by the University of Dundee at the graduation ceremony for the College of Arts and Social Sciences on 18 June.

Local income tax 'would be illegal'
The Scottish Government's plans to scrap the council tax have been dealt a fresh blow by a prominent academic who claims its proposed replacement may be illegal under European and UK law. Prof Himsworth is due to appear before the committee today with Prof Richard Kerley, of Queen Margaret University, and Prof Alan Page, of Dundee University.

Kidnap ordeal journalist honoured
BBC journalist Alan Johnston, who was kidnapped in Gaza last year, is to be awarded an honorary degree by his former university. Mr Johnston graduated from Dundee University in 1985 and will be honoured there next month.
