Free and frank discussions
Scotland's students may be feeling well-disposed towards Holyrood at the moment, following the recent scrapping of the graduate endowment fee, a move that has effectively made a Scottish university degree free.
However, the universities they attend are feeling a little less blessed, with a budget settlement well below the amount they had requested. Earlier this year it was reported that up to 100 jobs could go at Dundee University as a result of cost-cutting, and, more recently, the Dundee University principal, Sir Alan Langlands, blamed the "poor spending settlement" in part for the need to find £3m in savings.

Doctor who shrunk the surgeon
About 60 per cent of surgeries in the UK are carried out through a minimal access approach. Much of the credit for keyhole surgery as we know it today goes to the surgeon-steady hands of Malta-born Sir Alfred Cuschieri, who told Cynthia Busuttil that, before being accepted, the procedure was actually frowned upon.
