Congratulations to all those who have taken part in a fantastic week of graduations, whether as students, families or staff. The ceremonies have brought a great deal of media exposure to the University with widespread coverage of our honorary graduates, in particular Nicola Benedetti, Alan Johnston, Dame Vivienne Westwood and Lorraine Kelly. There has also been good coverage of individual student stories and plenty of excellent pictures in the local media. The Literary Festival, which continues over this weekend, has also attracted good coverage for a line-up that has included Ian Rankin, James Kelman and Sophie Hannah among many others.

Appointments
The Royal Society has rewarded 28 academics in British Universities for their achievement in the sciences by appointing them fellows. The new fellows include Professor Dario Alessi from the University of Dundee.

Fashion queen and journalist honoured
It was a day of extremes at Dundee University yesterday - from politics to fashion. Honorary degrees were conferred upon BBC journalist Alan Johnston, kidnapped last year by Islamic extremists in Gaza, and Dame Vivienne Westwood, who once shocked the nation by bringing bondage clothes to the High Street.

Pride in collecting Laura’s award
The achievement of a Dundee University student who died earlier this year from cancer will be recognised at today’s graduation ceremony. The university will confer a posthumous BSc on Laura Donaldson who had begun the final year of her zoology course when she died.

Battling Mum Beats Odds To Win Degree
A mum-of-two battled cancer and tragedy to graduate from university. Heather Neil was yesterday awarded a BA Hons in social work. The ceremony marked the end of four years of graft at Dundee University for the 45-year-old, of nearby Broughty Ferry.

Hostage to captive memories

A Dundee professor has been honoured for his contribution to medicine and nutrition. Professor John Cummings is to be made an OBE. Professor Cummings, who retired last year, was a clinical scientist at the department of molecular and cellular pathology at the University of Dundee.
