£1500 boost for Maggie's
The Maggie's Centre in Dundee today had its coffers boosted by £1500 thanks to Arlene Fenton who is fighting cancer. She raised the money - with Irving Miskell-Reid of Freedom Hair and Dundee Universities charities committee - at a fashion show in The Whitehall Theatre in February.

Students from Dundee University's charities committee will present a cheque for £1,500 to the Maggie's Centre in Dundee tomorrow. The money was raised by a fashion show organised by the students and held at the Whitehall Theatre in February.

Perth pupils tie up Strathmore Trophy win
A team from Perth High School yesterday took top honours in a competition to design a communication device. Teams representing 12 schools from across Tayside and Fife went head to head in Dundee University's annual competition for the Strathmore Trophy.

A phenomenal advert for Scotland's other national drink has prompted envy ahead of a conference on cancer prevention. Dundee University's Professor Annie Anderson wants to find more successful ways of informing people of the link between cancer and obesity and how they can take steps to prevent developing the disease in later life.

Rebecca Linford (34), who works from home, picked up the top accolade for a website index she created for the department of English at the University of Dundee. It was awarded first place in the recent Web Indexing Awards by the American Society for Indexing.

MEP hosts environmental lecture
SNP president, Ian Hudghton MEP has hosted a lecture in the European Parliament highlighting the diverse opportunities and challenges to Europe's environment and economy emerging from increased knowledge of algae. The lecture was led by Professor Geoffrey Codd of the University of Dundee, president of the recently formed Federation of European Phycological Societies, a body which brings together experts in the study of algae.

Specialist nurses can play a key role in supporting patients having radiotherapy, but more investment is needed
Researchers from the University of Dundee and the City's Ninewells Hospital also found that the patients - who were undergoing treatment for head and neck cancer - were more likely to be referred to members of the multi-disciplinary team. This resulted in better management of common radiotherapy side effects, like oral and nutritional problems.

How babies are more likely to die in Britain than most European countries
Babies in Britain have a poorer chance of surviving their first year than those born in most European countries, official figures showed yesterday. A study produced by researchers at Dundee University blamed the poor infant death record on 'Anglo-American' economics and inequality between the rich and poor.
