Dundee Masters Show 2008

Exhibition preview: Friday 5 September, 7-9pm.
A series of live artists’ performances will take place during the evening.

Exhibition: 6 - 18 September. Opening times: Monday - Saturday 11am - 5pm

The Dundee University Masters Show - highlighting the work from one of the UK’s most vibrant and innovative arts programmes in the UK - will once again be an exciting and vibrant mix of exhibitions when it launches on 6th September.

From the conceptual to the pragmatic, from beautiful to thought provoking, the Show demonstrates a range of work which will stimulate the audience, including a crumbled wall made entirely of Yellow Pages phone directories, a new design tool to train doctors to perform endoscopies or an evocative dance performance.

More than 40 students from five Masters courses, run by the Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design, will be showing their work. They include the Master of Design, Master of Science in Media Arts and Imaging and Master of Fine Art . This year for the first time, two exciting new courses will also be exhibiting: the Master of Sciences in Forensic Art and in Medical Art, jointly delivered by Media Arts and Imaging and the School of Life Sciences.

The exhibition will take place across three venues - Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art & Design; the Centrespace at the Visual Research Centre, Dundee Contemporary Arts; and Generator Projects, Mid Wynd Dundee.

MFA student Richard Webber’s piece is a tumbled down wall, constructed of bricks made entirely from the shredded paper of many Yellow Pages directories. The bricks and the wall represent how the information held in a book is of little value to a dyslexic, despite the fact that this information has constructed our society.

Master of Design student Jen Baillie has created a website to promote ethical fashion consumption by helping followers of fashion to create their own clothes from scratch and at an affordable price - she is determined to overcome the current trend of buying ‘throw-away’ fashion and encourages consumers to find their own trend, rather than follow the herd.

Jane Wood, 24, has developed a medical training system which could improve the way Doctors perform transanal endoscopic microsurgery, TEMS, which is a procedure that allows the removal of tumours from the rectum and colon. Jane says, 'Doctors currently practise their technique on a box which doesn't really symbolise the body. They can practise their technique, but the system is very basic. I’ve created a replica body, from the tummy to the thigh, with replica tubes and foam which feels and looks more like a real body. This allows the doctor to get a much better idea of how well he is performing and to give them a much more realistic way of practising.'

Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design’s postgraduate programmes are amongst the most innovative and exciting in the UK. The Graduate Centre established in 2005 is designed around a strong research ethos and brings together taught postgraduate programmes in a creative and flexible environment which encourages collaboration and stimulates multi-disciplinary approaches. Duncan of Jordanstone’s research mission is simple: to create a national and international centre of excellence in research and practice that is innovative, integrated, relevant and distinctive.
