Café Science debuts in Dundee

The first in a series of events designed to bring cutting-edge scientific research direct to the wider public will take place at Borders bookshop in Dundee on Monday January 28th.

Café Science Dundee is a place where anyone can come to explore the latest ideas in science and technology and offers a forum for debating science issues.

Each event will feature a prominent scientist who will explain an area of their research and then take time to debate and discuss it with the audience over a cup of coffee.

The speaker for the first event is Professor Inke Nathke, a Cancer Research UK Senior Fellow in the College of Life Sciences at the University of Dundee. Professor Nathke’s research is focused on colorectal cancers and in particular how specific molecular changes produce changes in cells and can lead to tumours forming.

Her talk is titled `From molecules to tumours: colon cancer from a Biologist’s perspective’.

The event takes place at 7 pm at Borders, Gallagher Retail Park, on Monday January 28th, everyone is welcome to attend and admission is free.

Cafe Science Dundee aims to promote public engagement with science by being informal and accessible for all. The speakers do not expect any prior scientific knowledge in their area so anyone can participate. The events are aimed at people interested in science but who never get the chance to discuss their ideas with or ask questions to somebody who really knows about science.

The Cafe Science Dundee events will start with a short informal talk from the guest speaker, usually a scientist from a variety of science fields, to introduce the topic. There will then be a short break to allow conversation about the topic to start and for mugs to be refilled! There will then be an hour or so of discussion, questions and answers. The format is felt to offer so much more than a formal lecture to people with a general interest in science.

The Café Science event will take place on the last Monday of every month.
