The nuts and bolts of succeeding at University - writing good essays, passing exams, completing dissertations and project reports - are laid bare to all students in a series of new academic guides from two University of Dundee experts.

As thousands of students start to arrive at Universities around the country, Dr Jonathan Weyers and Dr Kathleen McMillan, who combined have over 50 years experience in teaching and lecturing, are publishing three essential new guides for all students seeking the route to making their higher education a success.

The new titles, all published by Pearson Education, are:

  • How to write Essays and Assignments
  • How to Succeed in Exams and Assessments
  • How to write Dissertations and Project Reports

These follow the authors’ successful book "The Smarter Student", which was published last year and is now being reprinted in a new edition after a successful first run.

"It is not at all uncommon to have students who are full of brilliant ideas and extremely knowledgeable about their subjects but aren’t always the best essay writers or who suffer from exam nerves," said Dr Weyers.

"Being successful in education is about getting your ideas across and there are methods which we have outlined as being the best ways of achieving this."

Dr McMillan added, "What we are trying to do with these books is give people the skills so that their presentation and execution matches the quality of their ideas and allows them to show people exactly what they can do."

"We have been very successful in this at the Learning Enhancement Unit at Dundee and want to make this essential knowledge available to all students across the country."

Condensed pocket-sized versions of the books will be given free to hundreds of students starting courses in business, hospitality, accountancy, social sciences, medical and humanities disciplines across Scotland this autumn.

Dr McMillan and Dr Weyers have both been teaching and lecturing for over 25 years and more recently have specialised in the area of transferable skills, running academic skills courses and a Summer Re-sit School at Dundee with great success.

Dr Weyers is a co-author of Pearson Education’s ‘Practical Skills’ series for developing scientific study skills, a catalogue which has passed the million sales mark. Dr McMillan is co-author with Royal Literary Fund Fellow Bill Kirton of a recent book on academic writing, ‘Just Write’, published by Routledge.
