A Dundonian student has been awarded a prestigious scholarship by the University of Dundee.

Gemma VonGyer, 19, from Cleghorn Street, Dundee has been given a grant to help towards her studies at the University.

More than 20 students have been given the honour, which is based on good academic potential and is available to students who have accepted a place on one of the University’s 3 Year Honour Degree.

Traditionally, the length of an Honours degree in Scotland is 4 years, however, it is possible for well qualified students to complete certain Honours degrees at the University of Dundee in 3 years.

Gemma says, "I take great pride in being awarded this scholarship and it has encouraged me to continue in my studies towards my dream of being a doctor."

Professor James Calderhead, Vice Principal of the University of Dundee says, "We are very pleased to be able to offer these awards to new students. The costs of studying at University can be quite a burden on students and scholarships are a way of easing that burden. The Chancellor's Scholarships are highly competitive and students apply for them from all over the UK. All of the students receiving the awards have demonstrated outstanding achievement and we expect them to continue that level of achievement at Dundee and to act as influential ambassadors for the University in the future. We wish them every success."

The Scholarship Panel consider their educational record, a reference statement given by someone who is familiar with the students’ recent studies and the nature of the students’ personal statement.

Successful students are awarded £1000 per annum for three years while they study for an undergraduate Honours degree. Scholarship holders will receive a maximum of £3000 to help support them during their Honours degree studies.

To be eligible to apply for a Scholarship students must have applied for and firmly accepted an eligible degree course at the University of Dundee. Students must be domiciled in the UK and classified as ‘Home’ for tuition fees.
