Campus masterplan nominated for national award

The masterplan to develop the University’s city centre campus has been nominated for a national prize.

The Scottish Awards for Quality in Planning, run by the Scottish Government to promote high standards in development and land use, has nominated the campus masterplan in the category of `Development Planning’.

The masterplan has seen £200 million invested in new buildings and improvements to the existing estate. New buildings which have been completed include the Sir James Black Centre, the Queen Mother Building and the new residences.

In the nomination for the awards, Mr Mike Galloway, Director of Planning and Transport for Dundee City Council, said, "This investment is stimulating additional private investment in adjacent areas, providing a positive re-use for vacant sites in an area of land-use change."

"The project has successfully brought together planning partners to draft and implement a vision that has resulted in a campus that now has a safe, attractive and cohesive collegiate character."

The redevelopment, he said, had added a "fresh vitality to the campus and the wider city" that was crucial to the success of the University in attracting students and staff.

The development of the masterplan has seen the University working on conjunction the city council, architects and planning specialists, including the renowned architect Sir Terry Farrell.
