Day of culture

Something In The Air
14 November 2007

The University of Dundee’s annual Culture Day will look at the subject of air, climate and weather through a series of exhibitions, talks and demonstrations.

This fun and informal day has developed over the years as a way of introducing the people to the work of the different departments within the University.

This year there is a fascinating range of talks, including a lecture from Neil Taylor, a member of the Education department, on Thunder and Lightning without Rain - this includes a dramatic indoor demonstration.

Over the day there will be 14 short talks, which cover a huge variety of subjects. All talks are free, open to everything.

Lily Forrester from Philosophy will discuss French Philosopher Luce Irigaray and Matthew Dalziel, one half of the design duo Dalziel + Scully will show examples of their work which reflects on attitudes towards weather and the natural world.

Keith Williams from the University’s English department will consider the impact of electromagnetics and Serena Albanese from the Conservation Studio will talk about why pollutants are the real enemies for our health, but also for our cultural heritage.

There is also an exhibition running in the Tower Foyer Gallery until the 20th December, called Watch the Skies. This shows some of the ways in which artists and photographers respond to the weather and includes paintings by Joan Eardley and John Constable. There are also photographers by Michael Peto and Duncan Marquiss.

The first talk of the day, From Rainforests to Deserts - how plants cope with climate (and each other) will take place at the University of Dundee Botanic Garden, Riverside Drive - 11.30am to 12.30pm.

All other talks will take place in the main lecture theatre, Carnelley Building, apart from the 5.30pm lecture, The Anatomy of the Object. This talk takes place at the Cooper Gallery, Duncan of Jordanstone College.
