Dundee arts students make their mark

Past and present students from the University of Dundee in Dundee are making a significant mark on the Scottish arts scene this week, with a host of awards, nominations and exhibitions.

The University’s Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design has produced three of the artists - Anna King, David Cook and Helen Glassford - who have been nominated for the inaugural Jolomo Lloyds TSB Scotland Awards. The trio represent one-third of the nominees for the award, more than from any other arts college.

This follows the success of four current Duncan of Jordanstone students - Nichola Martin, Ericka Kinnear, Jenna Smith and Jennifer Boyd - who all took top prizes at the Royal Scottish Academy student exhibition in Edinburgh.

Today (March 1st) a new exhibition, Darkspace, opens at the RSA, co-curated by three students from the College. The Dundee students - Tielia Dellanzo, Nicole Porter and Fiona Hunter - have already been praised by RSA exhibitions co-ordinator Colin Greenslade, who said, "The Dundee students have selected and promoted this show to a very professional standard."

Over 160 first-year fine art, design and imaging students are currently exhibiting their work at the University as part of the annual General Course Showcase, which runs until March 9th.

Professor Georgina Follett, Dean of Duncan of Jordanstone College, hailed the performance of students and graduates as a striking sign of the College’s work in producing successive generations of successful artists.

"Creativity is something that Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design has in spades, and the current success we are seeing both for our present students and graduates exemplifies this," said Professor Follett.

"We are continuing to attract high-quality students and expanding into new territories all over the world, ensuring that Dundee remains a key centre for teaching and research across the arts spectrum."
