Award-winning project by Computing student

Alan Clelland, a final year student of Applied Computing, has received a boost for his Honours project and his bank account.

Last year, Alan entered a Higher Education Academy competition for reusable learning objects (RLOs). These are tools used for teaching students online.

RLO’s can be described as being like parts of a hamper. Alone, each piece of software, maybe a piece of music or an animation, would not be that useful but add all the combinations together and it’s a great package.

Having developed a number of RLOs during the summer of 2005 when he was a member of the Java Online e-learning project run by the School of Computing, Alan was keen to receive external recognition of his high quality work, which is also the subject of his Honours project.

His entry to the HEA RLO competition was one of many received from across the UK. After a long time spent reviewing all the entries, the judges have finally decided on Alan as the winner.

Alan received a £700 cheque from the Higher Education Academy Information and Computer Sciences Network. The award was made at lunchtime today by Karen Fraser of the Higher Education Academy in during a national workshop organised by the School of Computing - "Effective Learning in Object-Oriented Programming workshop".
