`Scotland & Medicine' nominated for UK's biggest arts prize

At £100,000, the Gulbenkian Prize for museums and galleries is the UK’s largest single arts prize. The long-list of 10 nominations for the award was announced today (2 Feb) and includes the `Scotland & Medicine' partnership.

Scotland & Medicine: Collections & Connections brings together the leading medical museum, archive and library collections in Scotland. The University of Dundee was one of the founding partners of the project, and Matthew Jarron, Curator of Museum Services at the University is a member of the board of management.

The project was started in 2004 to promote Scotland’s significant role in the history of medicine. Its most high profile achievement has been the Anatomy Acts touring exhibition, the most ambitious of its kind ever attempted in Scotland. The Lamb Gallery at the University was the first venue on the tour following its initial showing at Edinburgh City Art Centre. A full events programme was organised by Museum Services to accompany the exhibition in Dundee, highlighting the interdisciplinary nature of the subject by involving staff from Life Sciences, Medicine, English, History and Duncan of Jordanstone College.

Other outputs of Scotland & Medicine include two websites (www.scotlandandmedicine.com and www.anatomyacts.co.uk) and a series of publicity leaflets highlighting medical history in different parts of the country - with Museum Services acting as co-ordinator for Tayside.
