The MFA is a 12-month intensive taught programme that centres on practice-led research. Individual study is progressed through a combination of independent artistic investigation and the development of intellectual skills and knowledge of visual art. Self-directed practice is contextualised through critical reflection and writing.
The programme provides a working environment in which practice and theory are intertwined through tutorials, seminars, group critiques and lectures. While fostering individual priorities, the group identity of the programme's participants is developed as part of Postgraduate community within the visual disciplines of the Faculty.
Each year the Scottish Sculpture Workshop in Lumsden hosts a mentored residency for a MFA student. Student-led external projects are encouraged and links with the local, national and international art communities are considered essential to the programme.
