Tielia Dellanzo
Art, Philosophy & Contemporary Practices
Tielia Dellanzo’s installation `Parallel Latitude’ has developed through investigation and research of social spaces in particular that of the playground, examining how social and cultural identities are formed and the environments which contribute to those identities.
The particular spaces which have inspired the work seen in Tielia’s Degree Show installation are two of Dundee’s most popular public spaces - the Castle Green playpark in Broughty Ferry and the `oasis’ at the Boots corner in the heart of the city centre.
"My work looks at how a space and objects within it can impact on the person and how they react to and interact with them," said Tielia (46), from Scone.
"observing the environment at Castle Green and at the `oasis’ at Boots you see an extraordinary range of differences in the way people use space and are affected by it."
Tielia’s installation represents the subliminal actions people form as they interact with these objects and places, so we find, among other objects, a series of swings and a shimmering corridor of ribbon inspired by the light shining off the River Tay at Castle Green.
Steven Doyle
Fine Art
With the people who make up University of Dundee community as his source material, 25 year old Steven Doyle
from County Armagh has created a photographic project 'The Same but Different' based on identity, that has
brought together those sharing the same name. Following a lengthy period looking at the University's on-line
email directory to find matches, then through correspondence, Steven asked the pairs to come to the studio,
bringing with them an object that would say something about them. The colour photographs of namesakes meeting,
often for the first time, will be displayed at Degree Show, alongside a publication for sale that also
contains stories behind the objects and people - with mix-ups through mistaken identity such as library
fines credited to the wrong person or 100 kilos of metal turning up at the wrong office. Steven has also
tracked down twins working or studying at University of Dundee. He hopes to photograph Dave Gorman who
is performing in aid of diabetes research at Dundee University Student Union on 2 May, who sprung to
fame after finding people all over the world called Dave Gorman.
Gillian McLaren
Fine Art
Gillian, who came to Duncan of Jordanstone directly from Harris Academy, will present an installation
incorporating cloth sculptures and large-scale photographs. The pictures document explorative journeys
in the landscape and some of them were taken in the University of Dundee Botanic gardens. She would like
that the viewer uncovers the work by the same sort of exploration and will encourage visitors to look
inside a small case to see the work within. One of her sculptures entitled 'Tummy and Tights' emulates
a fragment of a female body and draws attention to the vulnerability of the human form.
Casey Campbell
Fine Art
Casey has made paintings and videos which feature a figure in an abstracted environment. She works on
the background before introducing the figure. Her work is heavily influenced by the 20th Century Danish
painter Vilhelm Hammershoi's paintings of interiors and Casey has included his motif of empty doorways
in her work. Casey sees the films she has made as 'moving paintings' and she recently received the
Peacock Visual Arts Award for Moving Image during the Royal Scottish Academy Student Exhibition for
one of these pieces.
Camilla Symons
Fine Art
Camilla, who is originally from Aberdeen, draws with silver. Her beautiful silverpoint drawings depict
rabbits, crows and worms which she remembers from formative experiences as a child of life and death
in nature. The silver, applied in the delicate textures of fur and feather, tarnishes over time
changing from a blue to a brown tone. Camilla was awarded the David Gordon Memorial Trust Award at
the Royal Scottish Academy Student Exhibition in February and has arranged to work with groups of
art students in Dundee and Glasgow over the next year organizing exhibitions.
Fraser Gray
Fine Art
Fraser has made a huge wall based piece of work which uses bold imagery and evocative figure painting. His
works portray colonialist links to our current society, for example, his piece 'The Summons' deals with the
repercussions of the British interventions in Sri Lanka. As a teenager he got into graffiti and credits the
visual and political elements of this scene for his choice of study path. He uses both spray and emulsion
paint in the symbolic, patterned backdrops and introduces oils for some details of the figures. He has
received sponsorship from Monster Spray Paints during his degree when he carried out a commission abroad.
The School of Fine Art
Fine Art
Art, Philosophy and Contemporary Practices
Fine Art students at Dundee enjoy working in a multi-disciplinary environment that includes painting, printmaking, sculpture, photography, video, computer-based imaging, installation and performance. Students are able to specialise or to work across disciplines, developing their practice with the support of tutors and in continuous contact with others pursuing their own pathways. The School's ethos of independent creative thinking linked to high standards of production equips our graduates for successful careers as exhibiting artists and in the wider visual economy where so many contemporary opportunities lie.
Head of School: Professor Tracy Mackenna.
