Barbara Macleod - Jewellery and Metal Design
The success of Jewellery and Metal Design student Barbara Macleod is likely to mean chilly times ahead for a flock of sheep! After she graduates Barbara is keen to establish her own studio where she can work on her distinctive designs which bring vintage decorative styles into a contemporary setting.
That is likely to mean the loss of a home for sheep on her father's croft at the family home in Lochinver. "My dad has a sheep barn which I'm hopeful of converting into a studio when I start up on my own," explained Barbara (21).
Barbara draws inspiration for her designs from the sort of intricate decorative detail that was seen in everything from lacework to architecture across centuries from medieval times through to the Victorian era. "My work is moving away from a more minimalist, bland aesthetic towards moe decorative patterns," said Barbara. "I think there is so much there that is interesting but that can be used in a new way."
Barbara is a winner of a Goldsmith's precious metal bursary which has helped cover material costs for her course.
Jonathan Morris - Interior and Environmental Design
Jonathan has designed what he describes as a giant cardboard mechano set during his final year in Interior and Environmental Design. In the set are 4 sheets, 2 triangles, beams and bolts. The idea is that you can use these parts to experiment with the endless possibilities of making your own hideout, den or sculpture. The set can be built in almost any location, outdoors or indoors, and is adaptable to its surroundings, for instance in a wooded area the trees can be used to hold up and lean different parts onto.
Jonathan has researched the eco friendly qualities of the material and looked at ways of waterproofing the cardboard to help it withstand the rain outdoors, and Langland McCavinish are set to manufacture the design for his Degree Show. Jonathan is inviting visitors to his Degree Show to interact with and manipulate the parts of the set to build and adapt the structure that will be on a site outdoors in an area of the art college. A live feed inside the art college will show the progress to the build.
Jonathan is 23 years old, from Leven in Fife, and wishes to get involved in working for an architects design firm or an interdisciplinary course of further study after graduating.

Jennifer Kelloe - Interactive Media Design
Jennifer Kelloe may have the loudest exhibit at this year’s Degree Show as she lets off her "noisebomb" - but it’s all designed to let people know when to keep the volume down.
Jennifer (22), from Dalkeith, has based her degree project around a noise awareness campaign which tackles one of the most common - and most annoying - factors of anti-social behaviour.
"Anti-social behaviour is obviously something that has been in the media a lot and I was aware from speaking to various people that noise is the biggest nuisance to a lot of people, so I thought I would develop a noise awareness package that is very different from traditional approaches," said Jennifer.
Her solution includes the `noisebomb’ with which sufferers can record a neighbour’s excessive noise and post it back to them through their letterbox. There are also standalone signs which `shout’ at passers-by and give an indication of just how frustrating exposure to anti-social noise can be.
"I posted a prototype of the signs in the corridor here in the art college and it wasn’t long before people were complaining that they were really annoying, so I took that as a sign that it works!"

Claire Millar - Textile Design
Claire's futuristic textiles are said to look like the clothes in the Sci-Fi thriller film 'The Fifth Element'. Claire's garments are based on her idea of a future of a totalitarian state where uniforms are introduced for people to cut down on individuality.
Claire has made three grey knitted garments, for her Degree Show, with hidden undergarments, of yellow, red and violet. The wearer can choose to reveal the colour underneath by unclipping a section of the top layer and folding it back. One of the violet undergarments is made from knitted lambs wool and a smocking technique has been applied to it to create a textured material, with sculptural qualities. Another violet section is made from felted wool, and laser cut to create a geometric stiffened textile. The colours have been chosen to represent the personality of the wearer, for example Violet is said to be a rare colour found in nature and so represents the rare nature of the person.
Claire won the Bradford Competition with commendation, where the prize was to go to Premier Vision, a major trade fair in Paris. Upon graduation, Claire will go to Istanbul, Turkey for three months on an internship with the knitwear designer Claire Tough, who she has previously worked for in London Fashion week. Vidal Sassoon is already interested in Claire's work and they have put in an order for six garments to be sent to Los Angeles, adding to the nine she has already made for them.

Chloe Templeman - Graphic Design
Chloe was a direct entry student into Second year of the Graphic design course, after completing the HNC and HND courses in Graphic Design at Dundee College.
Chloe has been working on three projects during her final year, which combine to form a diverse portfolio. A typographic piece was designed for the International Society of Typographic Designers for which she passed with merit. The brief was to design a campaign name, identity and a post pack full of goodies for a Magic society called 'Spell Bound', targeted at children and teenagers. The post pack is designed to welcome the new member to the society and inside each pack is a book, with magic tricks inside and a membership card. The Puma Campaign is Chloe's second project where the design, is understated yet powerful, based on the fact that a Puma is the only big cat without a roar. The billboard design is all black, with the lettering printed in gloss, and the white Puma logo on the bottom right, and the slogan, 'doesn't roar "doesn't have to" reflects the subtle impact of the design.
In November last year Chloe was on a placement in London and had one of her designs published in 'Design Week', a magazine that goes out to all the design companies. In June she will return to London for the New Blood designers exhibition. Upon graduation Chloe is set for another placement at The Partners, a design company in London.

Michael Shorter - Innovative Product Design
The idea of space-saving, functional furniture has been taken to a new level by Innovative Product Design student Michael Shorter who has designed a hi-fi that doesn’t need a shelf to sit on - because it is itself a shelf.
The `Audio Shelf’ houses a fully functioning MP3 player, amplifier and speakers within a handsome wooden shelf. The only clues to the shelf’s audio function are a small gap at the front where a soundcard can be plugged into the MP3 player to upload new tunes, and the small grid of speaker holes at either end.
"I was intrigued by this idea of making something which could completely blend in to its surroundings," said Michael (22), from Strathaven.
The Audio Shelf also has some unique controls not least for volume, which can be increased and decreased by placing different weights on the shelf. "We’ve had some fun placing a bucket of water on the shelf and draining some out and then pouring it back in, while the volume rises and falls in tandem with the water level."
Michael has established a dedicated website at www.interactiveaudio.co.uk
