Peter Kitson elected president of English Association


Professor Peter Kitson of the Department of English has been elected the 94th President of the English Association. Founded in 1906, the Association is the oldest established association and learned society in the United Kingdom for all those interested in English at all levels, from primary to higher education.

The Association produces a series of highly prestigious publications including the seminal journal English and the major annual, evaluative and analytical bibliography, The Year's Work in English Studies (Oxford University Press).

Professor Kitson follows in a distinguished line of a number of former Presidents including, John Galsworthy, Sir Henry Newbolt, Harley Granville-Barker, Osbert Sitwell, Sir Kenneth Clark, Lord Denning, Lord David Cecil, Dame Rebecca West and George Steiner.

The Association today is an international organization with branches, some 300 distinguished Fellows and members in Britain and throughout the world. It is a registered charity and in December 2006 was incorporated by Royal Charter.
