Digital student indulgence at Dundee

An interactive campus map on the mobile phone, degree programmes available for download and a virtual assessment zone are just some of the many services now available to students at Dundee.

The University has embraced the digital student with wikis, blogs, pod casts, and web conferences now commonplace services. Meanwhile, lecture room response systems and plagiarism detection have helped to improve the quality of learning for all students.

The eLearning systems, available across the internet, have been significantly upgraded over the summer months and will continue to grow and improve as the University continuously engages with both staff and students to design new electronic resources and systems to enhance the teaching and learning experience at Dundee.

New developments include the creation of a mobile-phone based interactive map to enhance access to student services on the city campus. The design is an ongoing collaboration between eLearning systems, DUSA and student services.

Also in development is a powerful self and peer assessment system, which will enable students to experience criterion-based marking first hand. Students will be able to provide and receive feedback in the virtual environment and gain skills in assessing others work.

The University is also embarking on an ambitious project to make degree programmes fully available on-line. This year, in some disciplines, students can download a full four-year set of electronic resources when they graduate.

Richard Parsons, Director of eLearning, said, "eLearning news is typically one of growth and we are now seeing increased sophistication in the use of electronic learning environments, such as discussion boards and language support, to enhance the student experience."

"The undergraduate and now postgraduate personal development planning (PDP) available to students at Dundee has already gained interest nationally, as our students prove to be well prepared for work within the Research and Enterprise sector."

"Meanwhile, demand for plagiarism advice, clarification and detection continues to expand and we are working on a complete framework for supporting the policy, education, compliance, detection and sanctions from a School viewpoint."
