The Lord Patel installed as Chancellor
The new University Chancellor, The Lord Patel Kt FRSE, was installed at an academic ceremony at the Marryat Hall on 31 May. Lord Patel succeeds Sir James Black OM.
Naren Patel is a graduate of Queen's College and has worked for almost all of his professional life at Dundee Royal Infirmary and Ninewells Hospital and Medical School. His work in the field of high-risk obstetrics is of international standing. He is a member of the House of Lords Science and Technology Committee and chairs the UK Stem Cell Oversight Committee.
The Chancellor's installation was followed by the conferment of honorary degrees on The Baroness Cox of Queensbury and Professor Anna Glasier OBE.
Baroness Cox has made a huge contribution to international humanitarian work over a period of many years. She was created a Life Peer in 1982 and has been Deputy Speaker of the House of Lords since 1985. She has been co-director of the Education Research Trust since 1980 and chief executive of the Humanitarian Aid Relief Trust UK since 2004. She was founder chancellor of Bournemouth University from 1991-2001 and is vice-president of the Royal College of Nursing.
Professor Anna Glasier is the lead clinician for sexual health services in NHS Lothian. She has an international reputation in the field of obstetrics and gynaecology, specialising in reproductive medicine. She is a member of a number of international bodies including ICCR Population Council, New York; CICCR Scientific Advisory Group, CONRAD, Washington and the WHO Human Reproductive Scientific and Technical Advisory Committee.
More honorary degrees will be conferred in the June and July graduation ceremonies.
