The beauty of medicine
A striking image that clearly illustrates the complex make-up of the human kidney has won first prize in a photography competition designed to showcase research in the Medical School.
John McGhee, a PhD student in the Department of Clinical Radiology, generated the image by combining computer visualisation techniques with magnetic resonance imaging data collected from patients.
Second prize was awarded to Dr Andy Irving, Lecturer in the Division of Pathology and Neuroscience, for his colourful image of neurological receptors important in brain function.
The competition, which was open to staff and students within the Medical School, was organised by Dr Jenny Woof, Reader in the Division of Pathology and Neuroscience, in collaboration with Dr Wynne Carter, Head of Computing and Media Services and his colleagues.
Dr Woof said, "The competition entries reflect the diversity of research going on in the Medical School. Following their exhibition in the Tower Building to coincide with the Discovery Days event, the winning images will now go on display in the Medical School foyer."
