A Chinese Master will teach the ancient art of calligraphy in a new and innovative Masterclass to be held in the Graduate Centre, Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design, in March.

The class is a unique opportunity for people with an interest in calligraphy to learn traditional brush pen techniques from an acknowledged Chinese master.

Professor Lu Rui Xiang from Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts in China will lead the class through brush stroke techniques, the structure of various characters, and formal calligraphy layouts and patterns.

Professor Lu is a distinguished calligrapher and painter who has over the course of 25 years exhibited extensively in Hong Kong, Taiwan, Japan and Korea. He has delivered lectures and exhibited in Hong Kong and Australia, and has work in permanent collections worldwide. He has also produced several books on calligraphy, including LU Rui Xiang's Calligraphy Works Collection, published by the Hainan Publishing Company.

The Masterclass is open to anyone with an interest in calligraphy, and will take place between Monday March 13 and Friday March 17. The fee of £250 includes all materials and tuition, and lunch and refreshments for the week.

In addition to running the Masterclass, Professor Lu will deliver a public lecture, and there will be an exhibition of his work. Admission to both events is free.

The lecture will take place in the Video Conferencing Lecture Theatre in the Matthew Building, Duncan of Jordanstone on Wednesday March 15 from 2 - 4pm.

The exhibition will run from March 15 - 22 at the Roseangle Gallery, 17 Roseangle, Dundee.

Professor Elaine Shemilt said, "This Masterclass is one of a kind, and the University is extremely honoured and excited to have Professor Lu spend time with us, not only displaying his art and presenting a lecture, but also sharing his skills and teaching us the techniques behind his ancient art."

The Scottish Arts Council has indicated that artists and/or art workers wishing to attend the Masterclass may apply for support through the professional development fund, marking "craft" as the main art form: www.scottisharts.org.uk/1/funding/apply/individuals/acrossartforms.aspx
